In the death of Alexandr Solzhenitsyn the world has lost a true champion. A person who pursued his convictions well beyond normal capabilities. While an ordinary man was obliged "not to participate in lies", "it is within the powers of writers and artists ….. to defeat the lie" said Solzhenitsyn

The task of the writers is much more daunting in the present context. … Not only to defeat the tonnes of lies, partial truths and untruths that pour out, but also to unravel the profound truth that lies buried deep in this rubble.

Lies, partial truths and buried truths are all harmful for the world. The so called "free press" of the so called "free world" was as obnoxious to Solzhenitsyn as the gagged world behind the iron curtain.

Solzhenitsyn's life is a beacon for those who cherish truth.
